Learning Opportunities

African-American Studies Partnership

St. Columba Conference Center offers an immersion experience for college and university students that spans three to five days and can be tailored to your organization’s needs. The experience is multi-tiered and engages students in a deeper understanding of Southern society and civil rights history. Memphis is home to The National Civil Rights Museum and other museums and historic sites that can be incorporated into your group’s experience. Memphis is also the home of the blues. Evolved from African-American work songs, spirituals and ballads more than a century ago, blues is regarded as the foundation of virtually every major American music form born in the 20th Century, including jazz, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and hip hop.

The program uses an experiential learning process that allows students to critically evaluate their experience and their responsibility to themselves and others. Small group discussion can help students share their thoughts, draw conclusions, apply what they learned and hold themselves accountable for the knowledge they have gained. Workshop facilitators are available to assist your group in these exercises and help your students process their emotional and spiritual experiences through drama. The National Civil Rights Museum comes to life when students act out scenarios in the presence of  historic artifacts and connect themselves to the reality of the past. Each program is created as a collaborative effort between Tim Geske, Director of St. Columba Conference Center, Workshop Facilitators Deborah and Levi Frazier and your staff.
